COST Foresight 2030 - Living the Digital Revolution

European Cooperation in Science and Technology - COST

Bruges, 007-09.10.2009

The digital revolution is driving innovation and scientific progress today. Interrelationships between science, technology and society are becoming more complex. COST Foresight 2030 focuses on the effect of the digital revolution on the world of 2030. A series of events will present a long-term perspective in many fields. These include Computer and Communication Sciences and Technologies (CCST), Energy, Food security, Natural resources management, Life enhancement and Society. These topics play fundamental roles in human life and are influenced by CCST-enabling technologies.

The outcome of the COST Foresight 2030, in the form of proceedings and policy recommendations, will be a valuable tool for researchers, policy-makers, industry, consultants, and strategy managers alike.

The Society Workshop is the sixth of the COST Foresight Workshops and concludes the series. It follows the Workshop on ICT/CCST that took place in April 2009 and four parallel focussing on the topics of Energy, Food Security, Natural Resources Management and Life Enhancement which will be held in June 2009.

Based on the conclusions of the five previous Workshops, the Workshop will try to envisage some aspects and possible futures concerning the European society of 2030.

Aims of the Workshop

The workshop “The European Society in 2030: A Look Forward” aims at picturing trends, possible, probable futures of the future European Society as shaped by the strong technological development intrinsic in the Digital Revolution. The Workshop will open new horizons and broaden the perspective on future society by enabling an open discussion on the major drivers of societal changes while using an interdisciplinary perspective. It will identify the challenges for future society, potential solutions and their probability to happen in the future. It finally aims at supporting policy makers in future policy development by providing tools for social, political, economic forward thinking and by helping them to adapt to a changing environment.
