Ramification of sex preference society in India: a case study of Punjab

Gender inequalities and biases pervade cultures worldwide, preventing women and girls from fully realizing their human rights, health and equality. In parts of India and Punjab, there is a strong preference for having sons as girls are perceived as a financial burden for the family due to small income contributions and dowry demands. In India, pre-natal sex selection and infanticide accounted for pre-natal determination and death of half a million girls over the last more than twenty years. The bias is rooted in a complex of religious, economical, social and cultural factors. The degree of bias may vary but it definitely exists at all levels and at different stages in girl's life affecting the fundamental rights of the girl-child to survival development, protection and participation. Thus, in our society, the systematic neglect and discrimination against daughters and son preference attitude are so deep rooted, the very birth of the girl child and their survival are at stake leading to declining sex ratio. The pathetic situation is that women are forced to endanger their own species either in the womb by practising female foeticide or at the time of birth by practising female infanticide. The persistence of social attitude and prejudices against girls continues to raise considerable concern for the whole of the society.
