The adoption by consensus of the United Nations General Assembly resolution Intensifying global efforts for the elimination of female genital mutilations in December 2012 is a testimony to the increased commitment by all countries to end this harmful practice. Evidence played a major part in bringing the resolution to fruition, and it will continue to play a central role in global efforts to eliminate the practice.     Evidence on female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is essential for many reasons – to understand not only the extent of the practice but also to discern where and how the practice is changing. It helps us understand the social dynamics that perpetuate FGM/C and those that contribute to its decline. Only with such knowledge can policies and programmes be effectively designed, implemented and monitored to promote its abandonment.
