World Congress 2014 Seoul

Gender equality and women development are becoming more important than ever in the contemporary world. Many countries have special ministries focusing on women issues to encourage women participation in all kinds of social spectrum and promote gender equality. In Africa and Asia, there is need to promote gender equality.

In this context, Millennia2015 participated in the second Word Congress under the team name Millennia2015 Great Lakes.

The team was composed of three members of Millennia2015: two young girls Gisele MUSABYIMANA and Denyse TUMUGIRE and one young boy Justin HAGENA KAKUMBA who is the Head of the Millennia2015 Great Lake Community. Before the flight to Korea, Justin HAGENA KAKUMBA was nominated by Congress Organizing Committee as Rwanda national representative since team members was supposed to fly from Rwanda.

The selection of participants was done on basis of a list of criteria: importantly the team should be in a team of three people with at least two girls and should present a 500 words written abstract on a specific topic. The Millennia2015 team worked on the topic saying: "Development of the Education System for Women's Capacity Building". Then basing on best abstracts, teams were selected to participate in the World Congress 2014. The Millennia2015 team was also selected in such conditions.

The UN Women and Duksung Women's University of Korea established a partnership in 2011 to organize the World Congress of Global Partnership for Young Women. The first World Congress of Global Partnership for Young Women was held in August, 2012. In the World Congress 2012, more than 400 young women and men from Asia and Africa participated to share their views on gender equality, women's empowerment, and also joined various training programs.

Duksung Women's University, in collaboration with UN Women again organized the second World Congress of Global Partnership for Young Women from 4th to 15th August, 2014 in Seoul, South Korea. The main theme of the World Congress 2014 was “Serving Together” whereby perspectives on womenomic, entrepreneurship, the agricultural value chain, violence and new paradigms and initiatives for global partnership among Universities from a gender perspective were shared between participants and panelists. The congress brought attention to the fact that women across the world continue to face structural barriers that result in discrimination, inequality, violence, and unfair treatment. This time (in the 2014 world congress), again more than 400 young women and men across Asia and Africa participated.

The congress was all about competitions through presentations of specific topics, poster session and in the election of Student's Organizing Committee (SOC). The team Millennia2015 composed of student all from University of Rwanda- CAVM was present in poster session and election of Student's Organizing Committee.

From the 2014 congress, Millennia2015 may be proud of the way the Millennia2015 team tried to market itself. Individually all members of the team Millennia2015 from University of Rwanda have many things with them back to Africa and to Rwanda especially. From Korean life style everyone may learn the hard work spirit. Justin Hagena Kakumba explains that, besides certificates in agriculture and ocean industry training, there is an important success story behind his participation to the word congress.

“The Organizing Committee of the World Congress of Global Partnership 2014 confirmed Justin HAGENA KAKUMBA from Millennia2015 as Chairman of the 2014 Student's Organizing Committee (SOC) as elected by all delegates of the World Congress of Global Partnership on the 5th August 2014”.  This is a success story for Africa, Millennia2015, DOT Rwanda, and particularly for Justin.

After being elected by the Congress participants, it was a surprise to see how everything changed either for Justin HAGENA KAKUMBA, the Millennia2015 team leader or for the name of Millennia2015 itself as organization since all participants wanted to know more about Millennia2015. Immediately his name changed from Justin to Mr. the president and consequently he was assigned the task of reading the “Seoul Declaration of Global Partnership for action” as new president. Korean newspapers published photos with Justin and other great leaders of the Congress in their news following the Seoul declaration of action. This changed him much. In the next congress,  Millennia2015 will raise its flag on the stage of the World Congress 2016. This will be our success as representative of the Millennia2015 Voluntary Researchers' Network.

This is the fruit of hard work, curiosity and determination. To all members of Millennia2015 the message is to work hard and try any opportunity available with the brand Millennia2015. Also determination and hard work can speak more than words so Millennia2015 members need to work hard for great achievement of Millennia2015 in the future. The truth is that all the great leaders we know such as Ban Ki-Moon and many other went from their villages through opportunities and impressed the world and finally shined. You can shine too.
